Find a Spiritual Director

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR

Spiritual direction has a long and respected tradition in the history of Christianity.  The desert fathers and mothers were sought out to share a word, to listen, to invite persons into deeper relationship with God.  So it is today, as spiritual direction provides a way of revitalization for God’s people. When seeking a companion for the journey of faith, the prospective directee is free to ask the following about a director:

  • Does the director see the direction experience as facilitating the director’s experience of God…
  • Is the director involved in on-going direction on a regular basis…
  • Is the director part of an individual or peer group supervision experience on a regular basis…
  • Has the director had adequate ministerial formation in direction which included a practicum component…
  • Is the prospective director hospitable and empathetic…

HOW DO I FIND A SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR?

Here are a few suggestions that might assist you in seeking out a spiritual Director…

  • Word of mouth…
  • Retreat Centers within your area or your Diocese
  • Interns and graduates from programs that train spiritual directors.

The Dominican Center for Religious Development was founded to make spiritual Direction available to interested persons – laity, religious and clergy – of all religious traditions. Spiritual direction is concerned primarily with helping individuals to place themselves freely before God who desires to communicate to them.  It assists Directees in reflecting on their life experience especially as it touches their relationship to God.  Spiritual direction at DCRD is based on these assumptions:

  • God communicates to all people
  • This communication is brought to awareness in contemplation and personal reflection.
  • The articulation and clarification of this experience in dialogue with a spiritual director is significant to the person.

Persons seeking spiritual direction are invited to contact the Dominican Center for Religious Development to make an appointment.  Please call the office at 248-536-3142. For more information visit www.dominicancenter.org or  Email: director@dominicancenter.org
