Spiritual Direction - Class Descriptions
History of Christian Spirituality
This course will develop an understanding of
the spiritual life as it appears in the tradition
of Christian Spirituality and in contemporary
experience.
Course Objectives
- To trace development of the concept
of spiritual growth from earliest traditions
to contemporary understanding;
- To enable students to identify
their foundational faith experience and
its function in discerning choices which lead to spiritual
growth and development;
- To understand discernment as a way of life and
a decision-making process;
- To recognize the criteria of sound spiritual
growth.
Course Requirements
- Required readings for each class;
- Presentation on the life and
spirituality of a person from history;
- Reflection paper
on one’s own spiritual
development;
- Participation
in 15 – two hour classes
Issues in Spiritual Direction
Guest lecturers
will address topics including spiritual direction with those
who have experienced chemical
dependency, incest, rape, emotional and/or physical abuse,
mental illness, depression, suicidal
desires. Also included are Group Spiritual Direction, Myers
Briggs, Enneagram, Journaling, Dream
Work and a variety of specialties.
Course

- To develop the ability to respond appropriately
to directees’ life experiences;
- To use typological tools and other resources,
i.e., dream work, journaling, etc., effectively;
- To
gain knowledge of referral sources;
- To identify resources for further
study.
