It is estimated that there are 1.1 billion people in the world who adhere to the Hindu faith.  In the United States there are 1.5 million.  Hinduism is one of the oldest religions and many people claim it.  This Saturday begins the feast of Diwali.  Diwali is one of the most popular Hindu holidays. In 2020, Diwali starts on November 14th and will continue for 5 days.

Diwali (also called Lakshmi Puja, Laxmi Puja and Diwali Puja) is the Hindu festival of lights.  One can trace its origins to ancient times when the harvest time was celebrated.   Another theme is that when the Hindu god Rama returned to his kingdom, lamps were lighted along the path to guide him.  To those who are Sikhs the festival symbolizes freedom.  Today, the lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope, a sign of the victory of good over evil.

The Dominican Center celebrates with our Hindu brothers and sisters.  We are proud to share life’s journey with them and wish them peace.
